12 Free Things to do in Wine in Country

12 Free Things to do in Wine in Country

Sonoma County, Calif. (Vocus) February 19, 2009

In tough economic times, a vacation in Sonoma’s wine country that centers on free, or almost free, activities is just the prescription. With a reputation as a wine country that is welcoming, friendly and relaxed, Sonoma County is also known as a great value for those seeking the lifestyle of great wine and fresh food.

Here’s a roundup of a baker’s dozen of free things to do in Sonoma Country.

1. See hot vineyard action at the Sonoma County Pruning Championship at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20 at SRJC Shone Farm, 6225 Eastside Road, Forestville. You need to be on time for this one. These competitors are professionals at what they do and can prune a row in no time at all.

2. Within the county are 13 American Viticulture Areas (AVAs, or appellations) — regions with unique soils and climates that allow certain grape varieties to grow particularly well. Discover a new area to visit and enjoy the main reason why people travel to Sonoma’s wine country — the wine. Many premium wineries in the county offer free wine tasting. Those that charge a minimal tasting fee (usally $ 5) apply it to the purchase of a bottle. Search all wineries at http://www.sonomacounty.com/wineries.

3. Visit a piece of Sonoma County’s agricultural heritage. Get a Farm Trails map and go visit a farm, nursery or ranch.

Experience life on the farm with sheep, llamas, honey bees, butterflies and birds! Seasonal adventures include summertime berry picking, apple farms, pumpkins and gourds in the fall, Christmas trees in winter and baby animals and fields of flowers in the spring. Can’t visit a farm? Attend a wine country farmers market. Most are seasonal, but some are year round, including the one at the Santa Rosa Veteran’s Building. More information at http://www.farmtrails.org

4. Western Hills Nursery in Occidental is a botanical gem. You can spend hours walking through it and enjoying the scenery. For over 40 years, Western Hills Nursery has been developing three gently rolling acres into a complete, mature landscape, using unusual or hard-to-procure varieties of herbaceous plants, vines, shrubs, and trees, many of which are seen nowhere else in cultivation. This array of plants has been arranged in such a way to satisfy the most critical and artistic eye and to delight the senses through color, form, texture, fragrance, and seasonal play of light and shadow. Water and man-made features complement the cultivated environment: a natural pond with water lilies can be viewed from one of the several footbridges that cross the waterways lined in dry-mortared rock, and an ornamental brick pool designed by one of the original owners is truly a work of art.

5. See a live seal show in Jenner. Throw your kayak or canoe into the Russian River at Duncans Mills and paddle to the mouth of the river and get close to the seals and sea lions that sun themselves on the beach. Don’t get too close, they are wild animals and should be treated as such.

6. Bodega Head is the rocky headland that forms the entrance into Bodega Harbor. The harbor side provides a popular crabbing area along the jetty, and the many hiking trails on the ocean side allow access to small, sandy coves and spectacular scenic blufftop views. The high cliffs offer excellent vantage points for observing migrating gray whales. And it makes for a great napping spot. Open your car windows, lean the seat back and be lulled to sleep by the sound of the crashing waves.

Goat Rock, near the mouth of the Russian River, is known for its scenic shoreline and easily accessible sandy beach. Picnic tables and restroom facilities are also available. Goat Rock beach is home to a colony of harbor seals which are fun to watch, but please stay 50 yards from the seals, especially during pupping season (March – August.) Due to the protected status of the seals, no dogs are allowed on Goat Rock Beach.

7. Check out LandPaths for unusual, off-the-beaten-path hikes on preservation land. LandPaths creates ways for people to experience the beauty, understand the value, and assist in healing the land in their local communities.

8. Strolling through the grounds at Paradise Ridge Winery a giant American eagle swoops into view. This is the winery’s Marijke’s Grove Sculpture Garden, a wooded grove nestled among ancient oaks. Situated high on a ridge overlooking the Russian River Valley in the heart of Sonoma County, Paradise Ridge Winery handcrafts wines rich in taste and tradition.

9. Christopher Queen Galleries, located in the charming town of Duncans Mills, specializes in early California paintings and contemporary art. The early California art, dating from the 1860s to the 1940s, features artists who are represented in the Oakland Museum, the De Young, the Crocker Museum and other museums and institutions. The downstairs salon features contemporary representational art depicting landscapes, figural, still life and genre. Open daily except Tuesdays, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

10. Sonoma County Art Trails Open Studios allows you to travel the back roads of Sonoma County and visit artists in their studio. See how established and emerging artists work, and talk to them about their inspiration and motives. This annual event takes place over two weekends in October. More information at http://www.artrails.org.

11. Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve, an 805-acre park, features a magnificent grove of ancient redwoods, a large outdoor amphitheater, self-guided nature trails and a variety of picnic facilities. During the 1880′s, this area was set aside as a “natural park and botanical garden” by Colonel James Armstrong, an early-day lumber man who recognized the beauty and natural value of the forests he harvested. Today, it’s the largest remaining old-growth redwood forest in Sonoma County. It is a living reminder of the magnificent primeval redwood forest that covered much of this area before logging operations began during the 19th century.

12. Look to the skies at the Robert Ferguson Observatory, located within Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Sonoma Valley. This gem offers public viewing occasionally for free or for a nominal fees of $ 3 a person. Also, take the PlanetWalk, a scale model of the solar system designed to fit within the boundaries of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. This “solar system” has been shrunk more than 2,360,000,000 times, small enough for the park to include the orbit of the most distant planet, Pluto, and large enough that the smallest planets could still be seen.

13. Nestled at the end of Dry Creek, Lake Sonoma is one of the prime recreational areas in Northern California. Warm Springs Dam forms Lake Sonoma with more than 2,700 surface acres of water for canoes, sailboats, motorboats, fishing and skiing. Some 40 miles of trails are available to horseback riders and hikers. In addition to developed campgrounds, boat-in campsites and many picnic areas, Lake Sonoma hosts the Don Clausen Fish Hatchery, which is the most modern fish hatchery in the State of California.

Custom Curtains Save Energy, Cut Heating Costs–and Transform a Room

Custom Curtains Save Energy, Cut Heating Costs–and Transform a Room

Curtains Made4U Logo

Kennett Square, PA (PRWEB) November 04, 2011

Custom Curtains Save Energy, Cut Heating Costs—and Transform a Room

Learn how to save up to 15% on your heating bills this winter with tips from the professionals at CurtainsMade4U.

Stop drafts and prevent heat loss at the windows by adding interlining to custom-made draperies, now available online at CurtainsMade4U, a newly launched sister division of Calico Corners. Few online or catalog sources of curtains offer true custom sizing—and even fewer offer interlining or blackout lining options.

What’s interlining? It’s a flannel-like fabric, never seen because it’s sandwiched between a decorative fabric and the lining, creating three layers of defense against cold and heat. “Layers of fabric trap air, and this is why interlining is so effective. It can keep you from turning up the heat this winter,” notes Julie Morris, director of the new online venture CurtainsMade4U.

“These linings were added to the CurtainsMade4U menu so that consumers could have linings that add lush fullness and are energy efficient as well,” states Morris. “Interlining also makes your draperies look fabulous!” she adds. “It adds a sumptuous quality, like a fabulous ballgown that is supported by tulle and lace petticoats beneath.”

Most homeowners would be shocked to learn that as much as 40% of the heat that escapes a home in winter is lost through the windows. Custom curtains are among the most effective window treatments to keep warm air from leaking out of a house. “They are made to fit the window exactly,” notes Morris, “Custom curtains can be made to overlap in the center and with returns that hug the wall for a snug fit around the window.” Air pockets between the layers create degrees of insulation–the more layers, the more warmth.

The advantage of layered window treatments is that they can be opened and closed to allow sunlight to generate warmth, continues Morris. “Why do we feel cold in bare-window rooms in the winter? Because our body heat radiates to these cold surfaces. Window treatments make us feel more comfortable without turning up the thermostat.”

Each layer at the window has an R-Value, which measures the ability of a product to resist heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the more effective that product is at insulating and reducing loss of warm or cool air. “As window treatments are added, R-Values keep increasing,” explains Morris. “With two or three layers, they add up to real energy savings.”

Layer 1: Shades are a good start

Shades mounted inside window moldings are the first line of defense to minimize air convection. Custom-made fabric shades (flat roman shades, London shades, balloon shades) will fit perfectly and can be made with thermal linings. Roller shades will help a little, but they are just a single layer at the window. Pleated cellular shades are a good alternative as they trap air within the honeycomb pockets of the shade so less air escapes through the glass. The more opaque the cellular shade, the higher the R-Value. Some shade styles have double cells, further increasing the layers of trapped air. “So if you have shades mounted inside your window frame, keep them. If you don’t, our sister division, Calico Corners – Calico Home offers a variety of custom-made shades,” offers Morris.

Layers 2-3-4: Draperies over shades are a better solution.

Adding lined floor-length draperies over shades adds further insulation. Draperies can add up to three layers of warmth to your windows: the face fabric, the lining, and an interlining in between the face fabric and the lining. Drapery panels should return to the wall, fit tightly and overlap in the center for maximum efficiency. This solution creates three trapped air spaces—and each one increases the level of insulation. Draperies should be floor-length for energy efficiency but should not block heat or air registers.

A Short Lesson on Linings

The room darkening lining and interlining offered with CurtainsMade4U products have special features and finishes to increase insulation. Room darkening lining, also known as “blackout lining,” contains several layers of aero-cellular acrylic foam. The layers provide excellent thermal insulation and help block light and noise as well.

Interlining enhances lightweight silks and drapery fabrics, adding body and shape retention. “Interlined draperies have heavier pleats and additional fullness in the folds, creating a more luxurious finished look,” states Morris. “They have the greatest resistance to sun and moisture damage. In addition, interlining can baffle noise and provide a high degree of thermal insulation, really kicking up the R-Value.”

CurtainsMade4U offers high quality custom-made curtains at prices frequently below ready-mades, with more than 500 designer fabrics from which to choose. Expert decorating advice is also available for those dealing with challenging windows. Custom curtains can be made for windows up to 13½ feet wide and up to 15 feet long. bpEnnovations Consults Renowned Building Scientist Steve Easley on Issues Pertaining to Roof Ventilation and Moisture Management

bpEnnovations Consults Renowned Building Scientist Steve Easley on Issues Pertaining to Roof Ventilation and Moisture Management

(Vocus) October 7, 2010

bpEnnovations, a developer of innovative building products recently spent time with Steve Easley, a nationally known and respected building science consultant to gain Steve’s views on moisture problems and ventilation issues in attics. Additionally, bpEnnovations introduced its AERIX Roof Ventilation System to Steve to gain his trusted viewpoint on this new product that was recently named one of 2010’s Most Innovative Products by Journal of Light Construction.

Said bpEnnovations CEO Kirk Moore “The opportunity to spend time with an expert such as Steve Easley is incredibly valuable in this stage of our early development. We asked Steve his opinions and recommendations regarding construction practices and designs for how to prevent mistakes that lead to ice dams, moisture problems and mold in attics. The information Steve provided meshed incredibly well with our viewpoints on the issues pertaining to roof ventilation and the products that we have in development”.

“Most of the problems that I see in attics are caused from poor ventilation at the eve and ridge” added Easley, “as well as attic bypasses that allow warm humid air from the house to penetrate attic spaces where it can condense on cold surfaces under roof sheathing.”

Steve continued “Codes require us to ventilate attics to get rid of excess heat in the summer and to be free of of excess moisture in attics that are the result of air leaks–moisture that can piggy back air currents leaking from conditioned living spaces into attics. Attic floors are full of such penetrations from wires, ducts, plumbing and can lights. Warm air is more buoyant than cold air and when that warm air rises and leaks into attics it carries moisture with it causing OSB to buckle, ice dams to form and even increases the risk of mold related issues.”

Steve also shared with bpEnnovations his viewpoint on compressed space at eves where roof framing members intersect walls, (resulting in insulation becoming compressed which restricts air flow and ventilation) structures with no baffles at all (allowing wind to push the insulation away from the eves leaving large areas without insulation) and general construction shortcomings with most conventional attic vent baffles.

Easley went on to offer his opinion on bpEnnovation’s recently launched AERIX Roof Ventilation System.

“What impresses me about the AERIX Roof Ventilation System” said Easley “ is that it is a baffle ventilation system that is very well thought out and addresses all of the issues. AERIX is sturdy so there are no worries that insulation will deform it and cut off air flow. It is designed to work with a variety of insulation systems such as spray foam, blown cellulose or fiber glass as well as batt insulation in cathedral ceilings. Finally AERIX has an extended tail at the bottom of the eve baffle that integrates with the exterior building wrap to divert water from a roof leak down the baffle and over the top of the wrap to day light. All in all it’s the best attic ventilation baffle system that I’ve seen. It’s a cost effective solution to preventing problems at this difficult to work in area.”

About bpEnnovations”

bpENNOVATIONS is a Rutland, Vermont based developer of innovative building products with offices in Rutland and Bennington Vermont. AERIX is exclusively distributed by industry-leader Parksite, servicing the building industry as a wholesale distributor offering a wide range of exterior and interior building materials.

Lexar Homes Announces An Energy-Efficient Building Approach

Lexar Homes Announces An Energy-Efficient Building Approach

Centralia, WA (PRWEB) February 24, 2011

Lexar Homes, the premier on-site builder in the northwest, announces new, energy efficient building practices that will result in long-term savings for the consumer. Lexar Homes is one of the first volume builders in the Northwest to build homes with a focus on energy-efficiency, sustainability and healthier indoor air quality.

Lexar’s new direction stems from consumer demand for affordable options in sustainably built, energy-efficient homes. James Moen and Bob Hollis, co-owners of Lexar Homes, find that more than ever people are concerned with how a home performs, as well as how it is built. “People like to work with us because we are local, our home plans are beautiful and our pricing is affordable. Then they hear about our energy efficient features and it’s like icing on the cake,” say Hollis. “We teach people, ‘If you saw $ 20 bills floating through your home and out the window, you’d figure out how to keep them in. That’s the focus on how we build our homes–to keep the money in,” he adds.

As part of their new approach, Lexar Homes has adopted an “above code,” philosophy. Current Washington state building code does not require many of the energy efficient features Lexar Homes includes in their standard package, including Energy StarTM rated windows and sustainable, healthier insulation. Lexar has learned through building science technology that a sustainable building approach and “above code” philosophy is the best for consumers and the environment. The costs for these improvements will actually provide a monthly return on investment in energy savings to the home owner.

Visit Lexar Homes http://www.LexarHomes.com to find a home consultant in your area. Lexar Homes serves Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

New Showoff.com Empowers Homeowners to Visualize Home Improvement Projects

New Showoff.com Empowers Homeowners to Visualize Home Improvement Projects

Plan your next project using Showoff.com’s powerful Visualizer technology

Sarasota, Florida (PRWEB) November 09, 2011

Homeowners planning home improvement and landscaping projects can visualize their dream home and yard — and avoid costly mistakes – using the new Showoff.com, a free online tool. VisApp LLC recently launched an extensive new version of the already-popular site, which now connects homeowners with suppliers and contractors.

Almost 120 million homeowners are taking on various home improvement and landscaping projects, according to consumer and media research firm Scarborough Research. With Showoff.com, homeowners upload photographs of their homes and use free design tools to visualize projects, including landscaping, remodeling and interior design projects. Homeowners can choose just one project type or plan a comprehensive makeover for their home or yard.

The new version of the site also allows users to browse catalogs full of real-world products and review information on potential contractors who can help with designing and implementing homeowners’ plans. More than 370,000 users have registered at Showoff.com since it was first launched. PC Magazine ranked Showoff.com the top home improvement application among The Best Free Web Apps of 2011 and 2010.

“If you’re going to invest time and money — and your heart and soul — into home improvements, you want to envision the finished product. Showoff.com empowers homeowners to visualize their projects at the design stage, select products, share their vision with friends and family, and even request bids from contractors,” said Showoff.com creator and VisApp founder Bobbie Ayers.

Showoff.com provides an Inspiration Gallery containing a catalog of homes and images representing different styles, colors, textures and products available in the marketplace. Homeowners upload their own photos, then select and change interior and exterior paint, doors, windows, roofing, exterior siding, columns, decks, landscape plants, fountains, patio furniture, and much more. Suppliers provide the product information and images, so homeowners can view real-world, brand products in their projects.

According to Ayers, the new Showoff.com connects homeowners with the professionals who can help them realize their designs. Homeowners can review qualifications and previous projects of contractors such as remodelers, landscapers and interior designers, among others. Homeowners also can request bids from contractors directly from within their own projects.

The new Showoff.com also includes enhanced design tools, such as the Color Schemer, which is not available in any other paint application, Ayers said. Homeowners select a main paint color, then view complementary colors from the color wheel for the ideal accent colors. Designers, home stagers and contractors save time by selecting a favorite base color from 16.2 million hues, then choosing up to three additional colors that coordinate with the base color. Color Schemer converts selected colors into HTML, CMYK and RGB formulas for ordering custom paints.

“The tools in Showoff.com are easy to use for the hobbyist, but sophisticated enough for the most discriminating professional designer or contractor,” Ayers said. “Our goal is to make designing and planning a fun, creative pursuit, while empowering homeowners to make real-world buying decisions.”

Air Filter Monitor Alerts Homeowners to Indoor Pollution

Air Filter Monitor Alerts Homeowners to Indoor Pollution

(PRWEB) December 3, 2004

According to the American Lung Association, approximately 85% of homeowners suffer from indoor air pollution, causing allergies, colds, and upper respiratory problems. Many of these problems can be avoided simply by replacing air filters on furnaces or air conditioners when needed.

The patented Ultimate Air Filter Alert™ monitor utilizes an air flow monitoring system to determine the most efficient time to replace an air filter. When the monitor detects a 20% restriction in air flow through the return air duct, it signals an alarm for homeowners to replace or clean the air filter.

“The Ultimate Air Filter Alert can soon become an invaluable asset when it begins to improve indoor air quality without an expensive air purifier, lowers energy bills by as much as $ 26 each month, and protects the investment in an air conditioning and heating system by reminding homeowners to properly maintain the system,” said Jody Helfend, CEO and Founder of Air Filter Alert.

In less than two months, the Ultimate Air Filter Alert pays for itself with reduced energy bills. Compare the value of the Ultimate Air Filter Alert, which effectively cleans the air in the entire home, to that of an $ 800 air purifier, which cleans the air in only one room.

“My husband never remembers to change the air filter in our home,” said Andrea Apter, a customer from Dresher, Penn. “With the Air Filter Alert I don’t have to worry — it beeps and one of us changes the dirty filter. It really puts my mind to rest that we are breathing cleaner air and  also saving some money on energy bills too!”

About the Ultimate Air Filter Alert™

The Ultimate Air Filter Alert is an unobtrusive air filtration monitor that attaches to the air conditioning intake grill with plastic ties. It is compatible with all forced air systems, and batteries are included.

Visit http://UltimateAirQuality.AirFilterAlert.com or call (267) 620-3108 for more free information about the air filter monitor. Individuals can purchase an Ultimate Air Filter Alert and start breathing cleaner air by filling out the easy-to-use online order form.
